Grace Under Fire (2011)

Following his defeat by WONG FEI-HUNG (John Chiang) in a duel, Guangzhou’s number one kung-fu master LUI KONG (Dominic Lam) is diagnosed with leprosy and he runs off in secret.

Blaming HUNG, LUI CHING-LUNG (Bosco Wong) who knows nothing about martial arts, is resolved to seek revenge for his father. Surprisingly, HUNG offers to teach LUNG the renowned LUI’s kung fu stances, and urges him to come back for revenge when he has picked up all the martial arts techniques. LUNG is deeply touched by HUNG’s generosity, which also marks the beginning of a complicated relationship.

HUNG meets MOK KWAI-LAN (Liu Xuan) and her sworn brother YAU SAM-SHUI (Kenneth Ma) in a restaurant, who has always wanted to be his apprentices. Despite their father’s opposition, HUNG decides to teach them kung-fu, and is particularly amazed by LAN’s sparkling talent. They gradually fall in love.

On the other hand, SHUI hopes to win the heart of his dream girl KWAI FA (Fala Chen) with his kung fu skills, though FA is actually in love with LUNG.

KONG emerges in Guangzhou all of a sudden, this time a tool of TONG YUET-HANG (Yueh Hua), Chief Commissioner of the Western District in his conspiracy against HUNG. Po Chi Lam’s reputation soon becomes tarnished.

I remember seeing the sales presentation clip for the series awhile back and I wasn’t quite that excited because it pretty much only featured John Chiang and Liu Xian XD I heard Liu Xian participated in the Olympics, hence she was taken to star in the series. She’s not really a familiar face but hopefully her martial arts will make up for it!

After seeing this promotional poster and the additional TVB actors/cast- I’m really looking forward to this series!! 😀 It reminds me of “Fistful of Stances” and “The Master of Taichi” which I absoluetly loved lol The storyline seems pretty interesting too and I heard Kenneth is playing a villain character as well..:)

I have hopes this would turn out to be a rpetty good drama- it’s of a genre I quite like in the past *fingers crossed*! hehe

    • sluzzy says:

Yeas Kenneth is playing a powerful and deep villain character who at first is an adopted orphan and sworn brother with Liu Xuan the main character. His role is very breaking and intriguing. It can be his breakout role.

Kenneth at first is a very nice person who’s always beaten by people and wants to learn martial arts but later turns into evil because John Chiang denied him as a disciple. He deeply love Fala but Fala rejected him and later he used Leung Ka Kei to be powerful and turn against his sworn sister Liu Xuan to get back at John Chiang. Kenneth kills someone very close to John Chiang to revenge and plotted with Ngok Wah and Dominic Lam to get revenge on John Chiang for giving him a hard time.

At the finale of the series while the now powerful Kenneth is burning Po Chi Lam(Liu Xuan’s inherited school from her husband) Liu Xuan will try to get Kenneth to turn back into a good person.

  • Rin says:

Hmmm, this series is giving me A Fistful of Stances vibe lol. Maybe it’s just cus of Kenneth 😛 hahah.
So another Wong Fei Hung’s remake eh? There’s one like every other year… Let’s see how this one will turn out.

P.S. Doesn’t Raymond Wong look the same as his Yeung Yeung’s character in No Regrets (minus the glasses)? Lol.

  • faithict says:

I remembered watching it on the sales presentation…I am not that excited with it as well…so is this going to be in cantonese or mandarin? I am thinking it will be something like “Growing through life” where some actors/actress voices will be dubbed?

    • KTVB says:

I tihnk it’s just the main character (Liu Xuan)would will be dubbed since eveyrone else is TVB 🙂 I watched the first episode! She’s actually pretty cute lol

      • Madeline says:

rofl, Liu Xian is ok, her character is too typical but lets just see if she does any dramatic scenes 🙂

      • Chibi says:

        I read an article saying how her Cantonese was improving over time during filming so she regrets that she had to have her voice dubbed ^^;

  • Hong says:

  • Jenny says:

Oh, this sounds really good! I love dramas set in this type of periods. Really anticipating this, too bad I have to wait for the Vietnamese dub, which usually takes a while 🙁

*Must control self from reading spoilers*

  • Chibi says:

  • thetruth says:

grace under fire is brainless rot. Such garbage with typical shitty plot where evil prevails and commoners suffer until final episode.

  • Mondai says:

Uh, not its shit. “plot where evil prevails and commoners suffer until final episode” congrats! You’ve just described 80% of every action programme in existance. What’s wrong with this type of plot pattern? Nothing. It may be overdone, but it works and has given birth to many classic series. I dare you to think of something better to replace it.

Granted, Grace Under Fire isn’t the best out there this year, littered with the occasional melodramatic one-liners and somewhat predictable scenes… But nothing is perfect. Behind the little flaws, is a set of endearing characters. Give it a go. Its not for everyone but don’t overlook it.

  • 'Muff says:

I finished the series today! (not that I watched each episode – but I watched some of the early ones and snippets as my family watched it, as well as the last 14 or so)

Yeah I didn’t wait till the end of the year – had holidays so I could watch haha and I was kinda impatient XD

    I really enjoyed it~
(and now to binge on the summaries to patch up on what I missed out on XD – the plague arc etc.) 😀 😀

  • lp says:

This series is so LAME and DUMB… all the martial art fight scenes in this series are just garbage…

  • Acky says:

Arghhhh the Ending of this series is Not good its not really worth it watching this series because a lot of people died in the end including Fala Chen ,Kenneth Ma and more . The series is really not that nice…. Arghhhhh

  • anon says:
